Context- and Quality-Aware Data Engineering for Scientific Facilities Dealing with Ultra-Large Datasets
Supervisors: Dr. Steve Aplin (EuXFEL), Prof. Walid Maalej (UHH)

As a DASHH fellow and PhD student, Michael conducts a project on data reduction and technical data quality at the European XFEL. The study program and the collaboration with the research group for applied software technology at the University of Hamburg provide a great opportunity to systematically involve user communities and to develop an advanced understanding of empirical software engineering research.

Having completed a Bachelor’s program in mathematics and physics and an international Master’s program in scientific computer simulation, Michael has contributed with both theses to the findings of the ATLAS collaboration at CERN. Committed to single top quark research, he specialized in detector physics, data-taking and data analysis. Before and during these programs, he gained expertise as a freelance data scientist and GUI developer. Since 2017, his work at DESY IT was focused on research and innovation in scientific computing at the crossroads of cloud and HPC. On DESY’s large-scale compute infrastructure, he has gained solid experience in designing, implementing and operating scalable data analysis services.

These inspiring insights into research and innovation in scientific computing motivate him to conduct this interdisciplinary PhD project at the interface of experimental physics and computer science. Fascinated by the cutting-edge research in the field of X-ray free electron lasers, he is very excited about the opportunity to participate in scientific experiments at the European XFEL.
