New Battery Strategies

Hackathon - Developing New Battery Strategies

When?

Thursday, November 10th & Friday, November 11th, 2022

Where?

Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotorn (DESY), Notkestraße 85, 22607 Hamburg, Germany

Registration

You are a graduate school at one of the Helmholtz centres or at one of the six Helmholtz Information & Data Science Schools (HIDSS)? Then, please write a short e-mail indicating your centre or school to christiane.ehrt@cfel.de to register for the event until October 21st, 2022.

The Challenge

Facing the challenges of climate change, many industries have adjusted their production and business to become more sustainable and reduce their ecological footprint. It is no surprise that also the shipping industry of Hamburg is investigating new technologies to reduce their emissions. Consequently, many shipyards are considering replacing their diesel combustion engine with a hybrid system that consists out of a battery combined with an engine. The dynamics between battery and engine are regulated by a battery strategy, which is a set of simple rules that use the current state of the ship to decide whether to use fuel or the battery to meet the power requirements of the ship.

In this hackathon, you will engineer new battery strategies that make use of state-of-the-art data analytics. Specifically, you will be provided a dataset of load profiles. Based on this data, you should design a method to forecast the power requirements in the near future. Then, you will engineer an optimal strategy for operating the battery that considers your forecasts and the underlying uncertainty.

The Prerequisites

Knowledge in Python and C++ Programming. Note that you will not need any additional knowledge about the topic itself.

The Trainers

Dr. Julian Golak (TUHH)

Hackathon Agenda

The Hackathon is composed of lectures and group work sessions. In the lectures, we provide you with an introduction into the problem and brainstorm together on ideas how to tackle the problem. Then, in the group work sessions, you will design and implement solutions that can be tested against a training data set.
