In his talk "From systems medicine to COVID-19 - Network-enhanced drug repurposing", Prof. Jan Baumbach from the Technical University of Munich (TUM, Chair of Experimental Bioinformatics) will give an introduction to the newly established CoVex platform for SARS-CoV-2 and SARS-CoV-1 host interactome exploration..Further details can also be found here: https://www.min.uni-hamburg.de/ueber-die-fakultaet/aktuelles/2020/0923-baumbach-vortrag.html.

ABSTRACT

One major obstacle in current medicine and drug development is inherent in the way we define and approach diseases. In the talk we discuss the prognostic value of (multi-)omics panels. We have a closer look at breast cancer survival and treatment outcome, as case example, using gene expression panels - and we will discuss the current "best practice" in the light of critical statistical considerations. In addition, we introduce computational network and system medicine. We discuss novel developments in graph-based artificial intelligence. Finally, we demonstrate how this concept was very recently applied to drug repurposing to fight SARS-CoV2/COVID-19. We conclude that network medicine and modern AI open new avenues to shape future medicine.
