Particle accelerators are instances of large distributed systems where the demand for complete automation is growing. Fully automated complex systems are vulnerable to faults due to the difficulty of predicting and testing for all possible faults. The problem becomes even more difficult if the system operates in a harsh environment, e.g., a high-radiation environment. In this research project, we developed the basic techniques for the construction of a fault detection system for the Low-Level Radio Frequency (LLRF) system of the European X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL).
