Curriculum

The Data Science in Hamburg - Helmholtz Graduate School for the Structure of Matter (DASHH) graduate program (18 ECTS credit points) comprises four branches that efficiently prepare young researchers for a successful future career in academia and industry alike: The curriculum is built upon four pillars introduced below.

Branch A | Knowledge Gain

Branch A encompasses all activities regarding knowlege gain. To this end, DASHH graduate researchers are eligible to attend all lectures and courses at the M.Sc. level at the DASHH partner universities. Besides the courses offered by DASHH, they can attend data science courses by the Helmholtz Association, the Helmholtz Information & Data Science Academy (HIDA), and the PIER Education Platform (PEP). The knowledge gain requirements might also be fulfilled by attendance to external courses, summer schools and workshops.

Branch B | Transferable Skills

Transferable skills courses (Branch B) are offered by DASHH and various partners (PIER Education Platform, MIN Graduate Center at UHH, Graduate Academy for Technology and Innovation at TUHH, Hamburg Research Academy). They cover several courses and workshops in the following categories

  • Good Scientific Practice*
  • Scientific Writing
  • Presentation Skills
  • Science Communication
  • Networking
  • Career Development
  • Healthy Work Conditions
  • Languages
Branch C | Current Research

Current research activities (Branch C) encompass the regular attention of the DASHH PhD Seminar and the Data Science Colloquium. In addtion, conference contributions and the attendance of lectures and talks will be acknowledged in this branch.

Teaching Activities

Teaching is not mandatory for DASHH graduate researchers. However, we highly encourage DASHH doctoral candidates to engage in teaching activities such as thesis supervision, seminars, and workshops. These efforts will be acknowledged within DASHH by awarding the corresponding number of credit points.
