We are happy to announce that Prof. Reidun Twarock (Mathematical Biology, University of York) will present her research on SARS-CoV-2 virus assembly. Her talk is entitled "Mathematical & Computational Virology: Coronavirus Assembly as a Novel Drug Target".

ABSTRACT

Mathematical and computational modelling, integrated with experiment, can reveal mechanistic insights into viral life cycles that are not accessible to any of the disciplines in isolation. Together with the Stockley Lab in Leeds, we discovered a virus assembly mechanism in a wide range of viral families, that has opened up novel opportunities for therapy. In this talk, I will provide evidence in support of the hypothesis that a variation of this mechanism also occurs in SARS-CoV2. This will include, among others, an analysis of structural cell biology data in collaboration with the Grünewald Group. I will also demonstrate that integration of such mechanistic insights into models of within-host infection dynamics provides a computational platform to assess merits of, and synergies between, different forms of antiviral intervention against Covid-19.
